Visit to MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts

Location:MAXXI Museum

Cultural Visit: MAXXI – Museum of XXI Century Arts
Date:
September 12
Location: MAXXI, Via Guido Reni 4a, Rome

On the final day of the Trade Mission, participants are invited to explore one of the most iconic examples of contemporary architecture in Rome — MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.

After discovering the architectural vision behind the project during Paolo Matteuzzi’s insightful presentation on Day 2, we now invite you to experience the space firsthand.

Commissioned by the Italian Ministry of Culture and completed in 2009, MAXXI is the first Italian public museum dedicated to contemporary creativity in art, architecture, and design. More than just a building, it is conceived as a dynamic urban campus — a place where innovation meets cultural experimentation.

Hadid’s design challenges the traditional idea of a museum as a single static object. Instead, MAXXI unfolds as a fluid field of interconnected spaces, where lines bend and walls flow into one another, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior, between art and architecture.

Covering over 30,000 square meters, MAXXI hosts two intertwined institutions: MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture. These coexist around a high-ceilinged atrium that forms the museum’s vibrant social and functional core, surrounded by galleries, an auditorium, a bookshop, a café, and open spaces designed for dialogue and discovery.

This special cultural visit offers an opportunity to engage with ZHA’s architectural philosophy in one of its most expressive forms — a building that doesn’t merely contain art, but becomes an evolving artistic experience itself.
